Plamsa-shell™ Emitter Products
Imaging Systems Technology's Plasma-shells™ can emit a wide range of light frequencies. This makes our shells perfect for a variety of differant lighting and display applications.

Large Area Flexible Displays
Imaging Systems Technology (IST) proudly exhibited the world’s first flexible color plasma displays using its patented Plasma-shell™ technology at SID 2011.

The shells are closely packed due to their non-circular shape, and tiled together. There is no limit to the number of Plasma-shell™ substrates that can be tiled together. The shells emit a sunlight readable light, and are also rugged.

Plasma-shell™ displays have competitive advantage in ultra large displays. Display applications include billboard and entertainment venues currently using LED technology.
Plasma-shells™ are ideal for large displays since:
- The cost to manufacture is substantially less than its LED counterpart.
- The substrate may be conformable, making it easily to install in older buildings with limited access to upper floors.
- Plasma-shells™ are voltage driven, so they can easily span large distances.
- Plasma-shell™ displays offer significant weight reduction over traditional plasma and LED displays.

Advantages Over Traditional Plasma Displays
Displays made from Plasma-shells™ offer many advantages over traditional plasma displays. Plasma-shells™ provide a much lighter, and more rugged display than traditional plasma displays. In addition, the manufacturing process is faster and requires substantially less equipment. A full comparison of the IST Plasma-shell™ technology to traditional plasma display technology can be found here.
Advantages Over LED Displays
IST Plasma-shell™ displays compare favorably with large LED displays. IST shells are substantially (100X) less costly to manufacture than traditional LED displays. In addition, since they are current driven, color and brightness does not degrade as size increases. A full comparison of the IST Plasma-shell™ technology to traditional LED display technology can be found here.

Novel Lighting
Imaging Systems Technology is developing novel light sources based on the Plasma-shell™ technology. IST has developed and demonstrated light emitting Plasma-shells™ that produce light from ultra violet to infrared.
This technology makes possible novel lighting products including:
- Architectural and decorative lighting
- Industrial lighting
- Digital signage and large area displays
Lighting Technology
The Plasma-shell™ is a hollow gas encapsulating structure. The gas is contained within a hermetic wall generally composed of glass or ceramic. Shell material, gas composition, and gas pressure are selected based on the specific applications. When a voltage is applied across the shell the gas ionizes. Generally for lighting applications a gas composition is selected that produces deep UV light when ionized. Phosphors in the Plasma-shells™ are selected to down convert the deep UV light to near UV, visible, or infrared.

UV/IR Scene Generation with IST Plasma-shells™
|
IR Scene Generation
|
Depending on the manufacturing parameters, and gas used in ionization, IST Plasma-shells™ can be used across the light spectrum for different types displays for many applications. Not all displays need to be visible to the human eye. The need exists for displays that operate in the non-visible spectrum, particularly the Ultra-violet and Infra-red areas.
IST Plasma-shells™ have been successfully demonstrated for use in scene generation for Ultra-violet and Infra-red applications (UV/IR). |
|
Controlled scene generation allow a specific (non-visible) image to be created so equipment and sensors can be tested.
Display sizes for scene generation can range from lab scale to large area.
